Spotlight on a Leader in Eastern 1:
Caryl Lorandini earned her BS in Elementary Education from SUNY College at Old Westbury, and MS in Middle School Education from Long Island University-CW Post. Mrs. Lorandini holds certification in both Elementary and Mathematics Education. Throughout her years of teaching, Mrs. Lorandini has found inspiration in her family, students and coworkers, as well as has a deep love of teaching and learning.
Mrs. Lorandini teaches math at Carle Place Middle-High School where she has been teaching for the last 18 years. She has worked on many NYSED committees since 2005, including the Mathematics Curriculum Committee, Math Content Advisory Panel, NYSED Standard setting, PARCC Panel, Item review and Next Generation Math Standards. She has served as an Executive Board Member of AMTNYS for 16 years and is the 68thPresident of AMTNYS. She has served on the Executive Board of LIMACON, NCMTA and NCAMS. Caryl has shared her expertise with educators by speaking at local, state and National conferences.
Among the many awards and accolades. Caryl Lorandini received, she has been the recipient of the Godreau Award for Educational Leadership, SUNY-OW Alumni Award for Excellence in Education, NCMTA Distinguished Service Award, NCMTA Middle School Teacher of the Year, AMTNYS Distinguished Service Award, Limacon Leadership Award, Long Island Mathematics Educators Hall of Fame Inductee and is a graduate of the NYS Master Teacher Program. She is the author of EZ-Guide to Pre-Algebra by Kaplan.
As the 68th President of the Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State, a new affiliate to NCSM, Mrs. Lorandini is most proud of their
Annual conference. Through many hours dedicated to getting the best professional development to the state, Mrs. Lorandini secured Jo Boaler and Steven Strogatz as the keynote speakers. Mrs. Lorandini along with Marianne Strayton, current vice-president, and the most incredible conference committee worked tirelessly together to improve mathematics education in the state. The conference in Rochester was held on November 15-16 and sold out two hotels and broke all previous registration limits.

Association of Teachers of Mathematics in New England (ATMNE)
ATMNE Twitter chats #ATMNEChat, which will occur bi-weekly throughout the school year on Sundays at 7 PM. Each of the six New England affiliates has agreed to participate by encouraging participation, promoting events, and posing discussion questions.

ATOMIM is planning an evening for math leaders on Thursday March 19th and a full day conference on Friday, March 20th. Their keynote speaker is Peg Smith and they have Maggie McGatha, Sara Frisbie and Donna Karsten as featured speakers.

ATMIM was the host affiliate for the of the NCTM Regional Conference in Boston, MA on September 25-27, 2019.
ATMIM hosted a Dine and Discuss sponsored by Texas Instruments on November 6, 2019 in Westborough, MA. This event featured demonstrations and explorations using TI Inspire calculators for coding with rovers. We learned how to program rovers to travel in equilateral triangles!
The ATMIM Spring Conference will be held on Friday, March 13, 2020 at The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. The keynote speaker will be Marian Dingle. Ms. Dingle is an elementary classroom educator with twenty years of experience. Always fascinated with mathematics, her early years in education are characterized by her obsession with advocating for marginalized students and guiding families toward opportunities. However, more recent years have caused her to move toward more public advocacy and activism in mathematics education. By pushing the conversation through her blog, Twitter, and in person, she seeks to center the intersection between mathematics and social justice.

RIMTA is preparing to host a Spring Conference on March 14, 2020, at the New England Institute of Technology in East Greenwich, RI. Steve Wyborney and Marian Small are the keynote speakers. RIMTA is working to streamline its communication structure, to make the connections between social media, the website, and the newsletter more seamless.
