News from the Southern 1 Region
Deborah A. Crocker, Southern 1 Regional Director
Winter 2017/2018

I want to thank all of the NCSM members I have met for making my visits to state conferences and activities so memorable and enjoyable. It has been an honor and privilege to represent the Southern 1 Region for the past three years. I know your next regional director, Bernard Frost, will do a great job!

The 2018 NCSM Annual Conference is the 50th anniversary for the organization. It will be held April 23-25, 2018 in Washington, DC. Join us to celebrate 50 years of NCSM! The theme for the conference is: "Leading Mathematics into the Future: Inspiring Monumental Change". Be sure to sign up to volunteer at the conference as well.

Bernard Frost and I will be at the Southern Region 1 Caucus, scheduled for Tuesday afternoon (look for the time and place in the conference program), April 24, 2018. Be sure to join us and welcome Bernard as your new Regional Director. The caucus will also give you the opportunity to meet others from the Southern 1 Region, receive information from NCSM, and give input to NCSM.

Many excellent opportunities for professional development were offered in the Southern I Region this past fall. I hope you were able to participate in some of them. Please let me know the events, dates, and locations of these opportunities in your states. I can make sure they are posted on the NCSM web site.

There are still more opportunities for professional learning in Southern Region I during the spring of 2018. Some of them are:

  • Georgia Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (GCSM) Winter Conference January 31-February 2, 2018 Jekyll Island Club, Jekyll Island, GA
  • Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics (VCTM) Annual Conference March 9-10, 2018 at Radford University
  • North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCCTM) Spring Leadership Seminar March 23, 2018 at the Radisson in High Point, NC

Please let me know if I can help you in any way as your NCSM Regional Director. Take advantage of the opportunities for professional learning in your state or neighboring states in the spring. I hope to see some of you at the 50th NCSM Annual Conference in Washington, DC on April 23-25, 2018. I will email more information on regional caucuses and a state team leaders meeting closer to April.

Stay in touch!
