News from the Southern 2 Region
Katey Arrington, Southern 2 Regional Director
Winter 2019/2020

In the last NCSM Inspiration, NCSM President Mona Toncheff asked "How can we be bold leaders if we only talk about equity and do not take action? As we lead this school year, what will be your first steps during the 2019-2020 school year? What actions will you intentionally take to develop structures that support deeper learning of mathematics for each and every learner?" These questions are certainly working to help me and inspire me to be more intentional about keeping equity at the forefront of my action planning! How have you been thinking about these questions too? The NCSM Essential Actions Series can help with tools and guidance for thinking about what to do next! The first two books: Instructional Leadership in Mathematics Education and Coaching in Mathematics Education are available now, and the Framework for Leadership in Mathematics Education will be released in April 2020 annual conference in Chicago! I can’t wait to get my copy – pick yours up at the bookstore or order online!

I have had such luck and been pleased to meet so many math educators over the last few months at both the Texas Association of Supervisors of Mathematics and the Alabama Council for Teachers of Mathematics. It was an honor to have been a part of the first in-person meetings of the Alabama Mathematics Leadership Alliance (AMLA), an organization that aims to support, sustain, and inspire high quality mathematics instruction across the state of Alabama through supporting mathematics leaders. AMLA is applying for affiliate status with NCSM and we look forward to introducing them at the conference in Chicago!

Speaking of, I hope to see some of you at the upcoming 52nd NCSM Annual Conference, Connect. Collaborate. Commit. Moving Mathematics Leadership into the New Decade, in Chicago on March 30th-April 1, 2020. Don’t miss this exciting event! Be sure to sign up to volunteer as well. It is a wonderful way to network with colleagues and speakers and feel the energy of a national conference!
