News from the Western 2 Region

Summer 2017

Summer provides the opportunity to rejuvenate while thinking and looking ahead to a new academic year. It is the time to relax for many and for others who are still at work to continue with the efforts that make a difference for educators and students alike. It is also time to read that pile of to-be-read-later articles, books, and journals. Consider some of the readings from the yearlong Call for Collective Action: Equity & Social Justice in Mathematics Education. I am reading and learning from Excellence Through Equity: Five Principles of Courageous Leadership to Guide Achievement for Every Student (2016) by Alan M. Blankstein and Pedro Noguera. There are many other thought-provoking offerings; check them out.

Enjoy summer!

NOMINATE A WORTHY INDIVIDUAL FOR A LEADERSHIP AWARD

There are many colleagues in Western 2 Region who have made considerable contributions to mathematics education. Consider nominating such a person for the Ross Taylor/Glenn Gilbert National Leadership Award. Any member of NCSM is free to submit a nomination, but the nominee need not be a member. Nominations are now open; the deadline to submit nominations for the 2018 NCSM Ross Taylor / Glenn Gilbert National Leadership Award is November 1, 2017. It’s time to honor someone who has made an impact in furthering the ideals of NCSM; who will you nominate?
