Personal Message

I am very excited about serving on the NCSM Board of Directors as the Regional Director for the Eastern I region. Serving in leadership roles in professional organizations in Rhode Island and New England has taught me how valuable organizations like NCSM and our state affiliates are for mathematics educators. I look forward to collaborating with colleagues in the region and the nation and sharing lessons learned in education. I am also looking forward to meeting prospective members across the Eastern I region and connecting them with all of the resources and connections NCSM offers.

For the past 31 years, I have been fortunate to teach middle school mathematics in Rhode Island. I have served in a variety of math leadership roles for my school, district, and state, including President of the Rhode Island Mathematics Teachers Association. At present, I am serving as President of the Association of Teachers of Mathematics in New England and in addition to my classroom teaching, I am an adjunct mathematics instructor at the New England Institute of Technology. I am finishing up my term on the Membership/Affiliate Relations Committee for NCTM and represented Eastern Region 1. I’m excited to continue my regional work as the Eastern 1 Regional Director for NCSM.

Improving student learning and achievement in mathematics has been a career-long goal for me as a classroom teacher and leader. We live in a challenging but exciting time for mathematics education. If we work together, then we can truly achieve great things as a professional community.

Member Story

I joined NCSM in 2015 at the recommendation of a colleague and attended my first NCSM Annual Conference in San Antonio, TX in 2016. At first, I wasn’t sure that I belonged. The conference speakers were motivational and inspirational, but I saw NCSM as an organization of leaders and I saw myself as simply a classroom teacher. But after speaking with other NCSM members, I realized that I am also a leader. I lead by example, being active in my own professional development, and I lead by sharing new ideas with my colleagues. By the end of that first conference, I knew I needed to get involved and stay involved with NCSM.

NCSM is full of committed and hardworking people who will help me continue to learn and grow professionally. It has been and continues to be one of the most valuable professional experiences I have ever had. Being a member of NCSM makes me a part of a very important organization that is making a difference in the lives of mathematics education leaders, teachers, and students. Together, we can not only learn from each other, but also speak with a unified voice about what we know to be true about successful mathematics education.

After becoming a member, I have increased my involvement in NCSM by serving as a State Team Leader for Rhode Island. I have also served on the Ross Taylor/Glenn Gilbert National Leadership Award Committee. Through these activities I have met some truly wonderful educators and have added to my professional learning network.
