I joined NCSM in 2015 at the recommendation of a colleague and attended my first NCSM Annual Conference in San Antonio, TX in 2016. At first, I wasn’t sure that I belonged. The conference speakers were motivational and inspirational, but I saw NCSM as an organization of leaders and I saw myself as simply a classroom teacher. But after speaking with other NCSM members, I realized that I am also a leader. I lead by example, being active in my own professional development, and I lead by sharing new ideas with my colleagues. By the end of that first conference, I knew I needed to get involved and stay involved with NCSM.
NCSM is full of committed and hardworking people who will help me continue to learn and grow professionally. It has been and continues to be one of the most valuable professional experiences I have ever had. Being a member of NCSM makes me a part of a very important organization that is making a difference in the lives of mathematics education leaders, teachers, and students. Together, we can not only learn from each other, but also speak with a unified voice about what we know to be true about successful mathematics education.
After becoming a member, I have increased my involvement in NCSM by serving as a State Team Leader for Rhode Island. I have also served on the Ross Taylor/Glenn Gilbert National Leadership Award Committee. Through these activities I have met some truly wonderful educators and have added to my professional learning network.
