News from the Central 2 Region
Sharon Rendon, Central 2 Regional Director
Winter 2019/2020

I was recently watching a TED talk where the speaker used a slogan, "If you are going to lead, LEAD." This slogan resonated with me as I think about the bold leadership that will be necessary to continue improving mathematics learning opportunities for all students. I have always said it was a goal of mine to see meaningful learning in every secondary math classroom in the United States. That goal is going to require bold leadership not only by me, but all my colleagues on this journey with me. Will you join me in leading?

Speaking of bold leaders, I had the opportunity to join 120 mathematics leaders in Des Moines, Iowa last month to collaborate and build their own capacity in the area of leading and coaching. This group of leaders support and impact instruction in almost every school in Iowa. We also had a group of leaders from Omaha, NE join us and man were they excited to take their learning back to their district. It is critical that each and every leader identify ways to advocate, design, empower, and monitor as they continue to be bold leaders.

Congratulations to Astrid Fossum from Wisconsin, who will be the new regional director starting in April. Read more about her background and experience. Please reach out to her and welcome her to this leadership position in the Central 2 region.

I hope to see some of you March 30th-April 1, 2020 at the 52nd NCSM Annual Conference, Connect. Collaborate. Commit. Moving Mathematics Leadership into the New Decade, in Chicago. Don’t miss this exciting event! Be sure to sign up to volunteer as well. It is a wonderful way to network with colleagues and speakers and feel the energy of a national conference!

Find a colleague and make a commitment to attend.
